You are cordially invited to join us for this exciting, timely workshop on Medical Wearables, co-located with BioCAS 2024, Xi’an, China.

Goal:

With the FDA clearance of biosensor features in consumer wearables (e.g., ECG in smart watches) as class II medical devices, the boundaries between consumer wearables and medical wearables are no longer as sharp as they were a decade ago. This represents a major shift for the industry of medical wearables that has the potential of accelerating their innovation cycles, shortening their time to market, and widening the scope of their usage.

The goal of this workshop is to provide a focused forum for assessing the field of medical wearables in terms of its past achievements, its state of the art, its outlook, and its implications for the commercialization pathway for new classes of medical devices.

Audience:

The workshop’s target audience is the biomedical circuits and systems community as well sister communities in biomedical engineering, sensory systems, and solid-state circuits and systems. The workshop will focus on the unique challenges of medical wearables considering the recent advances in biosensor development and bio signal processing in consumer wearables. These unique challenges include clinical trials and acceptance, medically accepted protocols, capturing of contextual information, interface standardization, management of health alarms, device security, and patient data privacy. Co-location with IEEE BioCAS 2024 will make it particularly convenient for participation by BioCAS delegates.

Participation:

The workshop will bring experts from academia and industry to share their perspective on the past, present, and future of medical wearables. The presentations will feature broad historical perspectives as well as visionary outlook of the future of medical wearable industry. Focused talks on recent research and commercialization will also be included in the program. A panel of experts will provide an interactive forum to help the attendees identify not only points of convergence and divergence between medical and consumer wearables and but also promising opportunities for collaborative research.
